Malicious Book Trailer Video

I wanted to make a blog concerning the art of making a book trailer video. So here it is!

I’ve seen book trailers made for so many of my favorite series, and that’s when the thought hit me: why can’t I make a video for my Morning Star Institute series? With a little help from Sweet Hell Designs, (my favorite graphic designer), Malicious book trailer was born.

Making a book trailer wasn’t as easy as I personally thought it appeared to be. First you need to buy the rights for the images you wish to use during your video. Next, you need to know how to distort, crop, and size every image accordingly, not to mention adding those fantastical elements which really make the video pop…fiery Hell-hounds any one?

Next, you need to choose the music you’d like to have playing in the back ground, if you’re not doing a voice-over. Choosing the music was definitely my favorite part of the process! We used a Fall Out Boy cover fitting to the pace I wanted the video to play. After you have gathered all of the above essentials, putting it together in slides, matching the time frame needed for the video, as the icing on the book-trailer-cake.

Now it is time to stick a fork in it, you’re done!

(Sorry for all the cake references. The New Years Resolution to eat healthy is fighting back with a vengeance)

Here is the Malicious book trailer video, just click the link below, and enjoy! Also, if you’d like to follow my blog, simply look over to the right of your screen, and choose to follow my book blog. Thanks guys, I have the best group of readers. No, really, I do!

Ultimate Writers Muse: The Playlist!

Every writer has a secret Muse to help get into their book’s mindset…often enough it’s through the PLAYLIST. I know that for me, tuning into my favorites (based on the particular tone of the novel I’m working on at the time), helps drown out my minds distractions, allowing me to think only of the characters and story before me.  Here are some of my favorites when working through the latest installment of the Morning Star Institute series,  Ruthless:

Never Too Late

Ashes of Eden

Diary of Jane

Between the Rain Drops

First Time

Never Let Me Go

Wish You Were Here

Now you’ve heard my playlist! Please feel free to follow my blog by clicking over to the right, on the follow button. Also, leave your comments if you have something you’d like to say. HAPPY LISTENING GUYS!

Author Resolutions to Keep

Happy New Year to all of my fellow authors, and writers!
New Year’s resolution can mean so many different things for many different people.
Some people cringe with the word, others embrace it like a spring’s first rain shower: a clean slate, and fresh new start.
If you guessed that I’m the former, you would be right.
As different as each of our new profound resolutions may be, I feel pretty confident when I say: as writers, and authors, we all share similar writing goals. Which is why, today I compiled several sources to help get, and keep you on track.
Let’s start this off right by saying…you really CAN do it all! By this I mean, you can be a parent, work two jobs, and still find time to write, only it may be in smaller increments than you would prefer. Writer Mama, Christina Katz says so, in her Writer Mama book she wrote to guide authors on Raising kids and your writing career side by side. In this fast-pace, real life writer hacks, Christina suggests keeping an open laptop on the counter and every time to walk by it, type something, anything, even one sentence, (a book gets wrote one word at a time).  I suggest the same for keeping a notebook handy at all time: in your purse, briefcase, care, coffee table, and write, write, write. When I’m constantly on the go, sitting at soccer games, doctor offices, waiting in car for school to let-out, I fill up my notebooks with the intention to transfer to my computer once I’m at home. Otherwise you will lose those fantastical ideas that kit you like a semi while standing in line at the grocers. You won’t remember later, trust me.
In writing guide, Hooked, by Les Edgerton, you’ll learn to write fiction that grabs your readers on page one, and never lets them go. My number one rule I live by is that you are bored writing your book, (at any time, on any page during your book,) your readers will also be bored. Write the kind of book you would want to read!
Another great read for an author is Fire in Fiction, by Donald Mass. In this writing installment of his, he explains step-by-step of how to outline a book, keep it flowing, and grab the attention of a literary agent. And perhaps most importantly, he explains what NOT to do to turn off readers, and agents.
Read different genres, write, build your brand through social media, and read about how to write and sell in our current book market. All of these help to build good author habits that you will continue throughout your writing career. Writers is my number one source for keeping up with today’s writing trends. You’ll learn from experienced authors, top Agents, and Publishers.
Another suggestion is to get yourself in a writers group that matches the genre you like to write in. My books are Young Adult, which is why I participate in YA Highway. Joining genre-related groups keeps you active in your community of writers, agents, and fellow ambitious authors.
Joining a critique group sponsored by a publishing house, is also a sure bet to wiggle yourself into the writing-world…Authonomy is produced by a division of Harper Collins, for instance. Here you get to post your hard work, have others judge and critique your book-baby, while Harper Collins keeps an eye out for real potential (a book deal is on the line here, so take a critique serious).  Here is a quick recap for what TO do, including some marketing tips.
  • Be consistent. Never stop researching, reading, and writing.
  • Build your brand by blogging several times a month, posting on social media accounts, and being yourself.
  • Take advantage of home pages for authors, such as Amazons Author pages. Upload your bio, picture, and books sold on Amazon.
  • Watch YouTube videos from other successful authors telling their story. Hey if it works for them, it could work for you.
  • Find, and invest in reviewers. Your mega fans are your greatest asset. Don’t take them for granted. Be real, and kind to these fans. They will be the ones to drive your book-baby.
  • Find a merry group of readers you can trust to read, and write honest reviews for top book-selling sites. Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes and Noble…even their own blogs and websites. Offer incentive by way of posters, free books, bookmarks or a mention on your Author website. A little gratitude goes a long way.
I hope this has helped. Everything I have learned, and posted for you here, came from advice from other authors, and agents. Most of which I found on Writers

Epic Facts about Book, Malicious.

As I’m finishing, and getting ready for the third-book in the Morning Star Institute series, Ruthless, to be published, I was going back and re-reading the first two books, making sure I kept my facts straight. Something that I thought would be fun for fans was to re-cap on some of these malicious traits that you all love so much.

(Please feel free to add your own favorite fun facts in the comment section of this blog post!)

  1. First of all, Dessi is Apollyon Starr’s daughter, and youngest of two offspring in which he claims, Abaddon being his eldest…Dessi is also Apollyon’s favorite.

  2. The Morning Star Institute is set in the cliffs of Santorini Greece. I choose this location because of some religious, and mythological beliefs that Greece is where souls went to live after death. Greece was/is considered to be the point between Heaven and Hell. What better place for a mythological Creature such as Apollyon to institute Hellions?

  3. No Place is the place Angels travel, humans and unworthy creatures cannot see, and is a way for Angels to spy upon the earth while traveling safely.

  4. Hellhounds are the protectors of Hell, and work personally for Apollyon. Every Hellhound aspires to be a great Hellhound and to be chosen by Apollyon, and serves with unswerving gratitude.

  5. Dessi is a soul, reader. Just as some people can see, feel, or sense soul auras and colors. Dessi can read souls by seeing the aura indicating if someone means to do harm to her or anyone else. Dessi can also read the part of the soul branded by a person’s/creature’s soul-name. The name a parent gives the child can produce a person’s/creature’s outcome and personality.

  6.   Lain is Angel obsessed with eating green-fruit. He also knows about Dessi’s fate being the Devil’s daughter, and constantly strives to make her see that she has a choice about who she wants to be. He tries hinting how she is part of a prophecy, but the Laws of the Angel’s prevents him from telling her outright.

  7.  Kione is a bad guy, a Drifter who comes from nowhere. Each name I chose in this book reflects the meaning of the name, and produces the characteristics Dessi sees when reading someone’s soul. My sneaky way of bringing to light her magical powers.

  8. Apollyon is waiting for Dessi to bloom into her powers. He expected a lot from his own daughter. He too knew of her fate, and what her potential powers could do if she were on his side. Apollyon pushes Dessi by forcing her to play his games, all in hopes she’ll show more promise and magic. Apollyon is a selfish Jerk…it’s in the Devil’s description.

  9. Malicious, and the Morning Star Institute is not meant to showcase any type of religion, only a fun fantasy world of Mythology.

  10. Ace is the top Hellhound-in-training. He has this whole bad-boy image going. Girls swoon over him, yet Dessi and Ace hate each other, (until they realize they secretly love each other)! There are more layers to Ace than he likes to show. Dessi sees this, and loves him for the good Hellhound he is. Sometimes, Opposites attract.

  11. Blake is Dessi’s best friend, also a Hellhound-in-training. Blake thinks he loves Dessi, and complicates matters by confessing this to her. When I’m reading a romance of any kind, (my favorite will always be paranormal romance), I enjoy a good twist on the love triangle. Love is complicated, not always an easy thing to see, and often hits you like a ton of bricks. Oh I believe in soul mates, but sometimes they take a little longer to find each other.

That about sums up everything you need to know about Malicious, the first of four books in the Morning Star Institute series. Both Malicious and Shameless are out in both E-book and hard-copy. By the way, my publisher, editors and I myself, are all getting excited for Ruthless, (Book3) as the final pieces fall into place perfectly.
